How much money your checkout loses every month (let's calculate)

How much money your checkout loses every month (let's calculate)

You know how many people visit your store. You know your average order value. But do you know how much money walks out the door every month because your checkout is broken?

Let's do the math together. It takes sixty seconds and the number might ruin your evening.

The formula your accountant won't show you

Here's the uncomfortable truth about online retail: for every 100 customers who add something to cart, only 30 complete the purchase. The global average cart abandonment rate is 70%. In the Balkans, it's often higher — up to 78%.

That means if 1,000 people add products to their cart this month, roughly 700 of them leave without paying.

Now multiply: if your average order is 3,000 RSD, those 700 abandoned carts represent 2.1 million dinars in lost revenue. Per month.

For a child: imagine you set up a lemonade stand. Ten kids walk up, but seven of them see a long line, get confused by the menu, or can't find the right coins — so they leave. That's your checkout.

Why do they leave?

Baymard Institute has tracked checkout abandonment for over a decade. The top reasons haven't changed much:

  • 48% — extra costs too high (shipping, taxes, fees shown too late)
  • 26% — the site wanted me to create an account
  • 25% — checkout was too long or complicated
  • 22% — I couldn't see the total order cost up front
  • 18% — I didn't trust the site with my card information
  • 13% — the website had errors or crashed

Notice something? Half of these are fixable in a weekend.

The three-second rule

Research from Google shows that 53% of mobile users abandon a page that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Your checkout page is no exception.

If your payment form is a custom-built page hosted on a budget server that takes 5 seconds to render on mobile — you're losing more than half your mobile customers before they even see the "pay" button.

A hosted payment page, served from infrastructure designed for speed, solves this without you touching a line of code.

Let's calculate your specific loss

Grab a napkin. Here's your formula:

Monthly visitors to checkout × abandonment rate × average order = monthly loss

Example 1: Small artisan shop

  • 500 checkout visits/month × 70% abandonment × 2,500 RSD = 875,000 RSD lost/month

Example 2: Mid-size fashion store

  • 3,000 checkout visits/month × 72% abandonment × 5,000 RSD = 10.8 million RSD lost/month

Example 3: Electronics retailer

  • 10,000 checkout visits/month × 68% abandonment × 25,000 RSD = 170 million RSD lost/month

Now, you can't fix all abandonment — some people are just browsing. But studies show that checkout optimization typically recovers 10–15% of abandoned carts. That's real money back in your account.

For the small artisan shop: recovering 10% of 875,000 RSD = 87,500 RSD/month, or just over a million dinars a year. From changing nothing about your products, marketing, or prices.

The cheapest fixes with the biggest impact

1. Remove account creation. Let people pay as guests. You can ask them to create an account after the purchase, when they're already committed.

2. Show all costs upfront. No surprise shipping fees on the last step. If you charge for delivery, show it on the product page.

3. Reduce form fields. Name, email, card. That's it. Every additional field costs you conversions. Do you really need a fax number?

4. Use a trusted payment page. When customers see a professional, branded payment page with card logos they recognise (Visa, Mastercard, DinaCard), trust goes up. When they see a sketchy-looking custom form, they close the tab.

5. Go mobile-first. Over 70% of Serbian online shoppers are on phones. If your checkout doesn't work perfectly on a 6-inch screen, you're ignoring your majority.
